“A cradle song for the God of Love” is how Josh Lee, viol virtuoso, describes the beautifully hypnotic “Le Dodo, ou L’amour au Berceau.” Originally written for the harpsichord by Francois Couperin in the years following the death of Louis XIV, Lee imagines “Le Dodo” as Venus caressing her mischievous son, Cupid, to sleep. And while his slumber is initially greeted by peaceful dreams, these give way to uncertainty and unease by the work’s close. “I believe Couperin is showing us how Cupid’s mischief infiltrates his dreams,” says Lee. “The wounds of love he inflicts are injuries that haunt him throughout the night.”
