With Greensleeves to a Ground master viol player, Josh Lee, takes a familiar holiday melody and reveals its origins as a love song and dance tune. “It’s always been one of my favorite Christmas carols, but it blew my mind to discover this melody is nearly 500 years old and people used to dance to it - and it had nothing to do with the holidays!” says Lee. With his interest piqued, Lee used a fiddle manual dating from 1685, “The Division Violin,” as his starting point. The result is a rollicking theme-and-variations that is at once new and totally familiar. “I love that the practice of stretching and riffing on a melody is so old,” continues Lee. “It’s like an extended dance remix from the Renaissance.”
